Artist Profile

Mai Ohtani

Mai Ohtani is a Japanese violinist born in the year 2000. She has spent her entire life chasing after as many interesting and different aspects of the violin as she could find. When she first heard Celtic music, she was attracted to the unique sound of the violin; from there she began studying its techniques and usage in many different genres. Because of her versatility on the instrument, she describes herself as a "violinist fiddling about." She loves improvising, practicing it every day, and often uses phrases from her improv in her original compositions. In January of 2024, she released "Atarayo," her first single as a soloist. At the center of her solo project is the theme of "Mokugeki," which means "to witness." It comes from the idea that she wants the audience to use every tool they have at their disposal, be it their eyes, ears, or even their whole body, to 'witness' the music that she is putting out into the world.
