The Actresses
The Actresses

Artist Profile

The Actresses The Actresses is a groundbreaking collective of women (Emma Miyazawa, Haruko Sekiya, Maho Minamoto, Marissa and Marie) who are redefining what it means to perform, to create, and to be seen. Through the power of acting and song, they challenge the traditional, patriarchal lens that has long shaped the image of women in entertainment. Formed in Tokyo in 2016, The Actresses emerged from conversations among five women working across Japanese theatre, TV, film, and music - conversations about the constraints placed upon female performers, the unspoken expectations of beauty, obedience, and silence, and the urgency to create space for self-authored narratives. Their performances are not just acts of art - they are acts of resistance. With every role they embody and every lyric they sing, The Actresses seize the stage as a space for truth, complexity, power, play, and diversity. Together, they form a constellation of voices that speak and sing - not in unison, but in harmony, where difference is strength.
