Michiko FujitaMI KO(MICHIKO FUJITA) is one of the very few professional English handbell soloists in the world based in Japan She captivates audiences across eras and cultures with her unique expressive style performing a wide repertoire ranging from classical masterpieces to contemporary and popular music She studies music theory under composer and pianist Koki Tajiri whose guidance has further refined her artistic depth MI KOs musicianship has earned strong international acclaim including becoming a finalist in the Folk Instruments Division of the 25th and 26th Osaka International Music Competition winning the Gold Prize and the Excellent Creativity Special Award at the Debussy International Music Competition 2025 (Percussion Professional) the 2nd Prize in Group L at the American International Music Competition 2025 and the Gold Award at the Virtuoso International Music Award 2025 (Percussion Professional) These achievements firmly establish her as a globally recognized artist In addition to her performance career, MI KO led the development of the practice handbell Prologue including obtaining a patent for its innovative clapper arm oscillation mechanism (Patent No7769419) Through her company, Kanade Ongaku Kikaku she has successfully launched the instrument nationwide and introduced a hands on version as a Furusato Nozei (hometown tax) return gift Her work spans performance, instrument development technical innovation and music education making her a rare artist who bridges both artistry and engineering in the handbell world
