Artist Profile

KENYA KISHITA

Born in 1975. Kenya has been performing as musician since 2002, playing hang drum and Darbuka(golbet drum) at festivals, concerts, art-related projects, and his own artistic praxis. His musical concept "building an invisible architecture by using sound" rooted his background as architect. Performance as process of construction, deconstruction arrives when the performance ends. Fragments of an event remain in the mind of listeners, and those materials disperse as they leave the event place. "s"- meaning of a musical rest in Arabic and moments play an important roll in his music. His thought "Sound Architecture" ranges sounds, architectural structure and process, which reaches space of time and beyond. Currently, he is a member of an Arabic percussion group, teaching Darbuka in several prefectures in Japan, an art directer/manager of the cultural-art complex "Tomaru-Building" in Kagoshima, Japan. He creates the new communication space where people can encounter various forms of Art.
