Yo HitotoBorn in Tokyo to a Taiwanese father and a Japanese mother, Yo Hitoto spent her early childhood in Taipei.
She graduated from Keio University's Faculty of Environment and Information Studies (SFC). During her time as a student, she performed in street live shows as part of an a cappella group.
In 2002, she made her debut with the single "Morainaki". The following year, the song earned her several prestigious awards including the Best New Artist Award at the Japan Record Awards and the Japan Cable Awards, and she made her first appearance on NHK's "Kōhaku Uta Gassen".
In 2004, her 5th single "Hanamizuki" became a massive hit. In the "DAM Heisei Karaoke Ranking" announced at the end of 2018, it was ranked No.1. The song continues to be covered by artists both in Japan and abroad.
In 2008, she held her first live concert at the Nippon Budokan.
Her 19th single "Tanin no Kankei feat. SOIL & "PIMP" SESSIONS", released in 2014, gained attention as the theme song for the Fuji Television drama series "Hirugao~Weekdays 3 P.M. The Lovers~".
In addition to her singing career, she has also worked as an actress, playing lead roles in the film "Café Lumière" and the musical play "The Woman in the Box". She has published poetry collections and essays, and contributed lyrics for other artists, expanding her creative endeavors beyond the traditional bounds of a singer.
Having been interested in music therapy since her student days, she continues to sing in hospitals and children's welfare facilities. In 2023, she established the non-profit organization "gigi".
