OBATALA SEGUNDO
Artist Profile
OBATALA SEGUNDOObatala is a Latin jazz band that Hideaki Nakaji, a trombone player who had/has been active in the Orquesta de la Luz, Nettai Jazz Orchestra and Salsa Swingoza, started his activities in 1997. The name of the band Obatala comes from the god Obatala, one of the gods of the polytheistic Santeria, which originated in Africa and is worshiped in Latin society in the Caribbean. Renamed to Obatala Segundo (second term Obatala) from 2007 due to member change. The current members are Yoshihisa Suzuki on guitar, Shihiro Ito on piano, Kiichiro Komobuchi on bass, Kenta Okamoto on percussion, and Kenta Okamoto, all-star casts that are indispensable to the contemporary Japanese music scene. The repertoire is centered on Nakaji's original, which is well-established in the Tropical Jazz Orchestra and Salsa Swingoza, as well as member's originals and covers of famous Latin numbers. In recent years, it has become a contemporary playing style that mixes other genres with Latin rhythm, and is characterized by the sound of the trombone and the unison of the guitar. Interplay by the most seasonal transcendental members is so novel that it greatly overturns the image of the conventional Latin band, and it is overwhelmingly exciting and moving.
