ArticalArtist Statement
Yutaka Ueno
My original experience as a stutterer has led me to create art using painting, rap music, programming, and video, all of which are based on the relationship between words, sounds, and the body. Words are not a means of communication, but rather a phenomenon that emerges as it stays and stumbles within me. My works are an attempt to preserve the moment when such words and sounds emerge, the movement of the body, and the events that occur when the materials themselves, such as the traces of hands and the texture of the soil, rise to the surface.
In my work, I focus on fundamental themes such as soil, words, things, and phenomena, and emphasize improvisational expression. The flow of rap music, the strokes in paintings, and the movement in videos are all not symbols that carry meaning, but rather the appearance itself. There is no clear message or intention behind them. I simply record the things that appear through my own body and thoughts as phenomena, without processing them. That is the attitude with which I approach my work.
The form of expression is fluid and never stays in one genre. Just as words transform into images, sounds, and movements, I aim for my work to be a phenomenon in which expression itself is constantly transforming. This is also a journey in which my crippled language, which began with my stuttering, is freely changing form as an expression.
I am a member of the Crippled Language group.
